I have worn a pair of MeUndies boxer briefs EVERY single day for over 365 days now.
On & off the trail.
Did I write an entire blog post about the boxers I wear?
Yes! I LOVE them that much.

Why I LOVE Hiking in MeUndies Boxer Briefs
My pair of hiking boxers is one of the most critical layers of clothing I wear on the trail.
Watch this video to learn more about the clothing I wear while backpacking (Jump to 9 min to see me talk about MeUndies specifically).
I have tried hiking in A LOT of different boxers over the past decade.
MeUndies outperforms every pair I have ever worn in almost every possible category.
You can check out MeUndies HERE or continue on to hear me geek out about them below. 🙂
When it comes to the boxers I hike in; this is what I’m looking at:
- Comfort & Fit
- Moisture Wicking Properties
- How Fast They Dry Out
- Antimicrobial Properties
- Do they stretch out after wearing?
- Longevity, Durability, & Cost
The World’s Most Comfortable Hiking Underwear?
“The world’s most comfortable underwear for Men & Women.”
One of the first things you might read on the MeUndies website.
Is it true?
YES, they are BY FAR the most comfortable pair I have ever worn.
No competition.
Your previous boxers will feel like cardboard after trying a pair of these out.
They are primarily (92%) made out of a material called MicroModal®. This material is very silky to the touch & is 3x softer than cotton.
Personally, I have never worn another material like it.
I will talk more about the magic of MicroModal® further into this review.
I also love the unnoticeable, soft, flexible waistband and unnoticeable tag.
Let’s talk about fit:
Right off the bat, these were the best fitting boxer briefs I’ve put on.
My legs were hugged with the perfect amount of tightness. The length was spot on.
This is very important to me since my legs rub together while I walk. In my experience, too short or loose-fitting boxers will lead to chafing on longer hikes.
What I REALLY LOVE about the MeUndies boxer briefs is the fact that they hold their form over long periods of time without washing.
Like they fit just as nice on day 7 of my backpacking trip as they did when I pulled them out of the dryer.
I hiked in Smartwool boxers before I made the switch over… They ended up stretching out and being as loose as my Nike shorts after a few days of wear.
Moisture Wicking Properties + Drying Time
The area below my waist is one of the first places to get sweaty while hiking.
A good moisture-wicking material pulls sweat through the fabric’s tiny spaces and dries out before soaking through. These do an INCREDIBLE job here.
This is especially nice in extremely hot temps. They have a cool feel to them, which is very nice.
Needless to say, if you’re sweating bad enough, these will eventually soak through.
They dry out super fast though (not quite as fast as some of the synthetic options out there). In fact, I often go swimming in just my boxers and then throw my shorts or pants back on over my soaked boxers.
Within no time, my body heat completely dries them back out.
Having base layers that excel at moisture wicking is also very important when your hiking in extremely cold temps.
I have worn these on a few snowshoe trips, and it was really nice to have my sweat dry out shortly after arriving at camp.
Non-Smelly Antimicrobial Goodness
I do a lot of 1-2 week backpacking trips…
No matter the length of my trip, I only bring the single pair of boxers that I wear.
This keeps things simple on the trail.
I have worn the same pair continuously without washing them for 2 weeks. No Joke.
I have had very unpleasant experiences trying this out with synthetic boxers in the past. I will leave that there.
The antimicrobial properties of these are right up there with wool.
It’s nice not scaring away the day hikers with your scent. 🙂
MeUndies Durability, Longevity & Cost Review
Do these silky shorts have a short shelf life?
Surprisingly not.
I say surprisingly because even the best articles of clothing usually fall short in at least one area.
After my first couple of weeks of testing these out, I was expecting to see holes or tears soon.
I originally purchased 4 pairs of MeUndies boxers at the same time.
I alternated between the pairs for over 365 days before seeing my first tears. I hiked a good 100 plus days during that period and wore them every single day off the trail as well.
In other words, if you wore the same pair every single day, they should last you a good 80-100 days.
When I wrote this, a pair of their underwear costs anywhere from $16 – $25.
Which is a pretty sweet deal considering you would pay anywhere from $25 – $50 for a pair of Smartwool or Ex Officio boxers.
More About How Amazing MicroModal Is
At the core of every pair of MeUndies is this material.
MicroModal is 100% natural. It’s produced from renewably grown beechwood trees.
MicroModal’s production process is environmentally friendly.
This is accomplished by saving water and energy and the recovery process of the resources used during the production of the fibers. MicroModal® has the EU Ecolabel.
It’s not to be mistaken with Modal. Regular modal isn’t nearly as soft.
Good News For Backpackers Sensitive to Synthetics
I have had various bad reactions to synthetic boxers in the past.
To get a little personal:
- Rashes
- Chafing
- Unpleasant Smells
I think it really just came down to certain materials not agreeing with my body.
These experiences can lead to very unpleasant times while hiking.
I know I talk a lot about hiking 1-2 weeks in the same pair of boxers…
That said, I have had many of these reactions happen on the first day of a hike…
And that’s proceeding a shower and having a freshly washed pair of boxers on.
Also, synthetic boxers like Ex Officio just have a plastic-like feel to them.
MeUndies Company Ethics
I love it when I see that a company that stands for good things.
“We believe in fair working and living conditions for all.”
“For us, it’s more than business. It’s making sure all our workers get fair wages and quality working environments. We only partner with state-of-the-art factories who value improving their employees’ lives, protecting the environment, and making high-quality products.”
Information that I found on the MeUndies website at the time of this writing.
I truly get the impression that they are a company that believes in doing the right thing.

You sold me on MeUndies – even though I’d listened to Bill Burr’s podcasts touting them for years – and they’re now pretty much all I wear (as underwear). I’m a retired guy who volunteers as a Colorado backcountry ranger and who’s planning a Colorado Trail thru-hike next summer, and MeUndies help me feel great! Thanks, Iron Tazz!

I LOVE Bill Burr! Best comedian out there in my opinion. Glad you are stoked on MeUndies too. Good luck on the Colorado trail & thanks a ton for the feedback.

I recently discovered your YouTube channel and blog. Both have been very helpful as I prepare to hike the Appalachian trail in April.
I ordered a pair of these and I liked them so much I ordered two more pairs.
Iron Tazz says
Yay. Super happy to hear that!
Wishing you the very best on the Appalachian trail.

I got a pair based on your recommendation and agree with all you points except one: I find Exofficio and similar fabrics dry a little faster for me, but like you said they do loose some shape after a while which could be an issue in the boonies. I’m looking forward to a week long trek next year for a more demanding test. Appreciate your info!
Iron Tazz says
Hey Donnie,
Thanks a ton! Super appreciate the feedback.
I definitely agree that synthetics can dry out slightly faster. I’ll be sure to put a note of that in this post.
Let me know what you think about them after some more testing.
Happy trails.
